Articles of Faith
To set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among
us . . . “that thou mightiest know the certainty of those things wherein thou hast been instructed,” we send forth the commonly believed confession of faith held among Separatist Baptists:
Of the Scriptures
We believe the Bible to be, as it is in truth, the Word of God consisting of 66 books which make up the Old and New Testaments, which, as originally written and providentially preserved, does not only contain and convey the Word of God, but it is the very Word of God, and that is is the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions should be tried.
I Thessalonians 2:13
We believe that every word of the Bible is inspired by God, making the Bible infallible in its content, and inerrant in its teaching. We believe that holy men of God were moved by the Holy Ghost in such a way that their writings were supernaturally and verbally inspired free from error, as no other writings have ever been nor every will be.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
2 Peter 1:19-21
We believe that God’s work in inspiration ensured the purity of His Word as it was delivered and that God’s supernatural work of preservation has ensured a pure copy of His Word for every generation, and that the extent of His work in preservation applies to the very words and not simply to the ideas and concepts.
We believe that the Authorized (King James) Version Old and New Testament are the Word of God kept intact for English-speaking peoples by way of God’s divine providence and work of preservation; and that the Authorized Version translators were not “inspired”, but were merely God’s instruments used to preserved His words for English-speaking peoples.
By “providentially preserved” We mean that God has, through the ages and by way of His divine providence, preserved the very words that He inspired; that the Hebrew Old Testament Text, as found in the Traditional Masoretic Text, and the Greek New Testament Text as found in the Textus Receptus, are indeed the products of God’s providential preservation, and are together complete, preserved, inerrant Word of God.
Of the True God
We believe that there is only one True God, and that He eternally exists in the form of Three Persons: the Father (Jehovah), the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit that are equal in every divine perfection, and executing distinct, but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption.
1 John 5:7
2 Samuel 7:22
John 1:1-2, 14; 14:7-11
Of Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Second Person of the Trinity, and has eternally existed as God in every way.
John 1:1-2, 14; 14:7-11
1 Timothy 3:16
We believe that Jesus became man without ever ceasing to be God; accepting all of the essential characteristics of man and never relinquishing any of the attributes of God, making Him the true God-man.
We believe that Jesus, having been tempted of sin, was never at any time capable of committing sin.
We believe that Jesus Christ shed His blood dying a literal voluntary death on the cross for the sins of fallen man, rose again on the third day, and was seen of over 500 witnesses.
1 Corinthians 15:3-6
We believe that Jesus, having ascended to heaven, is our High priest, and acts as our Intercessor and Advocate on the right hand of the Father.
Of the Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity, has eternally existed as God in every way; the Holy Spirit restrains the evil one until God’s purpose is fulfilled; that He is the witness and guide into all truth; that He shall not speak of nor exalt Himself, but will glorify the son of God; that the Holy Spirit is the agent in the New Birth; and that He seals, endues, comforts, guides, teaches, witnesses, sanctifies, and helps the believer.
1 John 5:7
We believe that the Holy Spirit is the person that reproves the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.
We believe the Holy Spirit is the supernatural Agent in salvation, indwelling and sealing the believer until the day of redemption.
John 3:5-6; 14:16-17
Romans 8:9, 14-16
We believe that certain gifts given by the Holy Spirit such as tongues, healings, prophecy (foretelling) and miracles were used to transmit the revelation of God and validate the message of Christ and the ministry of the Apostles and as such were temporary and have been replaced by the complete revelation of God, the Bible.
1 Corinthians 13:8-10
Of the Devil, or Satan
We believe that Satan was once a holy angel that enjoyed great position in heaven, which he lost by rebelling against God, and taking many angels with him; that Satan is now the prince and power of the air, and the unholy god of this world; that he is mankind’s great tempter, the enemy of God and His Christ, the accuser of the saints, the author of all false religions, the chief power behind the present apostasy; that he will be eternally cast into the Lake of Fire.
Matthew 13:19, 38-39
Of the Creation
We believe that the universe was created by God in six literal, 24-hour days, and that the earth was “good” as God pronounced, needing no evolutionary process to bring it to completion; We believe the Genesis creation record is to be accepted literally, and not allegorically, or figuratively;
Of the Fall of Man
We believe that man was created by God, in His image and likeness; We believe that Adam voluntarily transgressed therefore fell from his sinless and happy state; and that by the sin of one man all men are now sinners, not by constraint, but by choice and therefore became alienated from God, and is totally incapable of doing anything to remedy his condition.
1 Corinthians 15:21-22
The Virgin Birth
We believe that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was born; We believe that Jesus was conceived of the Holy Ghost rather than a man; We believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate, both the Son of God and God the Son.
We believe that all mankind is born alienated from God by sin and that atonement for sin is provided by Jesus, Who by His death, made a full and vicarious atonement for the sins of mankind, providing redemption through His blood; that without the shedding of blood is no remission of sin, therefore, the shed blood of Jesus Christ, that cleanseth man from all sin, was presented in heaven, was sprinkled on the true mercy seat, and was accepted by God the Father as the atonement for the sins of the whole world, only becoming effective through man’s individual repentance, confession, and faith.
Isaiah 53:4-7, 10-12
Hebrews 9:12-15, 22-26
Of the Death and Resurrection of Christ
We believe that Jesus voluntarily laid down His life on the cross and that He rose again from the dead three days later, according to the Scriptures; We believe that the Lord’s resurrection was attested to by many infallible proofs.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
We believe that grace, being the unmerited favor of God, is the necessary means by which salvation is provided to man as there is nothing in man to merit the favor of God.
We believe that salvation is received by grace through faith; We believe that the blessings of salvation are made free to all by the gospel; and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth but his own inherent depravity and voluntary rejection of the gospel; We believe that a person, upon salvation, becomes a child of God and inherits eternal life in heaven, and that there is nothing a person can do to lose that inheritance; We believe that the Old Testament saints were also saved by grace through faith.
1 John 5:11-13
1 Peter 1:3-5
We believe that man is justified by faith alone; that justification includes the pardon of sin; and his works are merely a manifestation of that faith.
James 2:18, 21-22
We believe repentance and faith are solemn obligations, and also inseparable graces, wrought in the soul of man by the quickening Holy Spirit of God; that being deeply convicted of his own guilt, danger and haplessness, and of the way of salvation by Christ, man must turn to God with genuine remorse, confession, and supplication for mercy, while at the same time believing on the Lord Jesus Christ to be the only true and sufficient Saviour.
Of the Eternal Security of the Saints
We believe all the Redeemed are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, and are, therefore, secure in Christ; and that eternal security is synonymous to eternal life, and is a work of God which insures that the gift of salvation, once received, cannot be lost by any true believer.
Romans 8:15-16, 33-39
Of Last Things
We believe that upon death, our soul immediately passes either into the presence of Christ or into Hell to await final judgment in the Lake of Fire for all eternity depending on whether or not we put our faith in Christ on this earth.
2 Corinthians 5:8
We believe in the pre-tribulational, pre-millennial rapture of the saints where Christ will return to meet them in the air, taking them to heaven to await the millennial reign at His second coming; that the rapture will terminate the dispensation of the New Testament Church, and will induce the time of Jacob’s Trouble.
1 Corinthians 15:52
1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
We believe in a literal seven-year tribulation time where God begins to focus again on His chosen people the nation of Israel; that the Tribulation will will culminate with Armageddon: the final terrible event in world history when the Lord Jesus, with heaven’s host, returns victoriously making the kingdoms of this world to become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ.
We believe Heaven is a literal place where saints will be with Christ for all eternity.
We believe Hell is a literal place where lost man will await final judgment in the Lake of Fire where they will spend eternity.
Of the Righteous and Wicked
We believe there is radical and essential difference between the righteous and the wicked; that only such as through faith are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and sanctified by the Spirit of God, are truly righteous in His eyes, and that all such as continue in rebellion and unbelief are in God’s sight wicked and under the curse.
Proverbs 10:6-7; 11:31; 14:32
John 3:18-21, 36
Of Human Sexuality
We believe that God purposefully created mankind (male) and female (woman); that God blessed and charged man and woman to fulfill the design of their sexuality (intimacy and progeny) strictly in the confines of a marriage relationship between one man and one woman for a lifetime; and that pornography, fornication, adultery, polygamy, incest, bisexuality, homosexuality, bestiality, and any other such aberrations are all perversions of God’s design for mankind, and heinous transgressions of God’s law.
Genesis 1:27-28; 2:18, 21-24
Of Biblical Separation
We believe that saints are to separate themselves unto Christ, developing His mind, being conformed into His image, and that genuine effort toward this end will naturally cause separation from this worldly conduct, interests, philosophies, and unions.
2 Corinthians 6:16-18
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
Of the Church
We believe that the New Testament church is a local, visible, autonomous assembly of baptized believers organized to carry out the work of the Gospel; that Jesus Christ established His church during His earthly ministry, prior to the events of Acts Chapter Two and the Day of Pentecost, and that He intends to continue His work through churches, operating as the head of each.
Acts 6:1-3 (see also Acts 13:1-4)
We believe that the only two offices of the church are pastor and deacon, and that the pastor is responsible for taking the oversight of the church, leading and feeding (spiritually) its membership according to the Word of God and the Chief Shepherd Jesus Christ, while the role of the deacon is to aid the pastor with the practical cares of the church enabling the pastor to focus on his role in prayer and the ministry of the Word.
1 Timothy 3:1-13
1 Peter 5:1-4
We believe that the two ordinances of the church are baptism and the Lord’s Supper; We believe that baptism is merely the first step of obedience to Christ, symbolizes the believer’s death burial and resurrection in Christ, is to be by immersion, is the doorway to local church membership, is to be carried out under the authority of the local church, and is only for the saved.
We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a symbolic ordinance, picturing Christ’s body broken for our sins and His blood shed for our redemption, and that participation is to be reserved for the membership of the local church administering the ordinance.
1 Corinthians 11:23-25
Of Baptism and the Lord’s Table
We believe that baptism is the immersion in water of a believer in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, by and under the authority of a New Testament Baptist Church, to show forth in a solemn and beautiful emblem one’s faith in and identification with the crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, with its effects; death to sin and resurrection to a new life; that baptism is a requisite to the place and privilege of a church membership and to the Lord’s Table in which, after solemn self-examination, and by the use of unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine, the members only of a given Baptist church are to commemorate together the sacrificial love of Christ.
Matthew 3:5-8, 13-17; 26:26-29; 28:18-19
1 Peter 3:21
Of Missions (including Faith Promise)
We believe that the Great Commission given to churches includes the work of starting churches in an effort to evangelize the world; that the church is debtor to those who have never heard the gospel; that the magnitude of the Great Commission constrains autonomous New Testament Baptist churches to cooperate together for the accomplishment of the task.
2 Corinthians 8-9
We believe that all throughout biblical history God has required a tithe of His people, and that failure to comply is considered stealing from God; that the institution of tithing predates and is separate from the Law; that God’s people honor God by giving willingly above and beyond the tithe as an act of thanksgiving and appreciation toward God, and that God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7
Of Civil Government
We believe civil government is ordained of God for the interest and good order of society; that government’s purpose is to punish evildoers and to support and defend the righteous; that believers are commanded to honor, obey, and pray for all that are in authority, that men may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty; that civil government has no jurisdiction in respect to the free exercise of the church; and that civil disobedience is justified only in things opposed to Divine Law, which is supreme, and to the will of the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the only Lord of the conscience, and the coming Prince of the kings of the earth.
2 Samuel 23:3
The Blood of Christ
We believe that the shedding of Jesus’ blood was necessary for the atoning of man’s sin and that without the shedding of blood there can be no remission.
Hebrews 9:12-14, 22
We believe that the Bible speaks of many specific judgments of which the two primary pertaining to mankind are the Judgment Seat of Christ and the Great White Throne Judgment.
(Judgment Seat of Christ)
We believe that the saved in Christ will be taken at the rapture and then judged and rewarded, not for sin, but for that which has been done after salvation, for Christ, in a biblical manner, and with a sincere heart.
2 Corinthians 5:9-11
1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
(The Great White Throne Judgment)
We believe that all lost people will be judged according to their works and found guilty before God and cast eternally into the lake of fire at the Great White Throne Judgment.
